No one is sure exactly
when it happened, but once upon a time someone
saw the sugar white sand and the emerald green
water of Panama City Beach and dubbed the area
as the home of the "World's Most Beautiful
Beaches."
Development began on Panama City Beach in the roaring
twenties and the beach was officially opened to the
public in 1936. Shortly after the beach opened the
original Hathaway bridge was constructed to connect
Panama City Beach to the town of Panama City.
In the early years of this soon-to-be tourist hot spot, vacationers and tourists alike, from Alabama and Georgia began to frequent Panama City Beach's cottages and mom and pop hotels.
The 1970s brought
bigger and better attractions to the Miracle
Strip. Water parks, a greyhound racing track,
golf courses, fishing fleet and more upscale
restaurants were added to the things to do
list.
The 1980s and 1990s brought more changes. Older hotels
were being replaced by attractive resort-style condominiums.
More and more vacationers began choosing Panama City
Beach for their Florida beach vacation. Residential
subdivisions were built and filled. The medical facilities,
schools, churches and shopping centers were built to
support the growing year-round population.
In 2005, major commercial development was taking place in and around Panama City Beach. Residential development is continuing at a staggering pace. Upscale beach resorts are being developed along the shoreline. One wonders why it took the rest of the world so long to figure out the appeal of the area. Maybe it is because the locals wanted to keep their paradise to themselves. Afterall, Panama City Beach is known as "The Worlds Most Beautiful Beaches" constantly.
The Dunes of Panama located on Thomas Drive in the heart of Panama City Beach offers furnished one, two, and three bedroom gulf front condominiums. The Dunes has been hosting memorable family vacations for over 20 years. We suggest you check our competitive rates, amenities, and floor plans. Beach
features 27 miles of sugar white sand beaches
meeting the crystal clear emerald green water
of the northern Gulf of Mexico. Panama City
Beach is consistently rated among the top ten
beach vacation destinations in the United States.
A top five rating from Southern Living Magazine,
top ten from the Travel Channel, number three
from Yahoo Travel, a number three from National
Geographic Traveler, and number 4 from Hotels.com.
How did the Panama City Beach sand get so white?
Centuries ago quartz crystals from the Appalachian
Mountains washed down into the northern Gulf
of Mexico. The surf ground and polished the
crystals and deposited them on the shore. The
sub-tropical sunshine bleached the crystals
to their current sugar white color.
The sub-tropical climate makes a Panama City
Beach vacation a great idea year round. The
Gulf water remains above 70 degrees between
late April and early October, and 80 degrees
or above between June and September. Average
high air temperatures range from 65 degrees
in the winter months to the mid to upper 80s
during the summer months.
